"Life Of Pi" by Yojimbo

A Canadian writer visits an Indian immigrant who recounts the tall tale of when he was ship wrecked with only a Bengal Tiger for company. Directed as it was by Ang Lee, I was expecting Life Of Pi to be a visual feast and I was not disappointed on that score; there are some truly gorgeous images on display and it is this eye boggling splendour that is the film's strongest suit. The format is very reminiscent of a Jean Jeunet film, told in flashback with many visual devices to draw you into the story. The plot itself is actually rather thin; much of the film takes place within the confines of a single lifeboat and considering the fact that there's only one human character involved, this makes for some rather sparse dialogue. Suraj Sharma and Irfan Khan make for an engaging protagonist …

Hey, it was a good idea to film Life of Pi!

Ang Lee's adaptation of Yann Martel's beloved novel is a visually spectacular coming-of-age tale staying true to the spirit of the source material whilst mining its off-the-wall premise for as much breathtaking visuals as possible. The script probes spirituality, faith, and perseverance intelligently instead of the easy way (which is normally insulting to the audience). The cgi is very impressive, especially for the rendering of Richard Parker, the cantankerous Bengal Tiger stuck with our plucky protagonist Piscine Molitor "Pi" Patel. The supporting cast has little screen time (or any chance of survival) but they all give strong performances given their brief appearances. Ang Lee does a fine job of ensuring that the audience is emotionally invested in the character's numerous blights and …

The best movie, and faith.

Wow what an amazing, best, Christian, drama, faith, action, story, and family move. I love Life of Pi and I saw it in theaters twice. I really think its defiently one of the best movies ever made. I love it how Richard Parker the tiger doesn't kill Pi in the movie. I love it also that it's Christian and faith movie. If Life of Pi would have won the movie of the year that woul have been excellent. Ang Lee the director of Life of Pi did an excellent, and perfect job directing the movie. The second time I saw Life of Pi my friend went with me to saw it. She also really liked it. I loved it the most. Before the movie was out on DVD I kept on talking about how good and amazing it was. I would recommend anybody to see Life of Pi, and to me it wasn't a slow movie. I though the actors did a …

Life of Pi

A beautiful film! Fueled by some amazing and dazzling visual effects, Life of Pi is a fantastical story of survival, but there's so much more to it. On the surface it's a survival story, but it's also a poignant tale about finding oneself. As the film draws to its close, you think you have a grasp on the message, but then the ending concludes and you realize there's a little bit more to think about. Ang Lee really did a great job here; he takes you on this marvelous journey (in 3D), but subtly and effectively leaves the ending just open enough for interpretation. Suraj is really good as Pi, especially considering this is his film debut; Irfan Khan and Rafe Spall are also effective in their supporting roles. There are some "okay" moments here and there in terms of cgi, but overall the …

Life of Pi review

What a beautiful film. I just can't say enough about the visual aspect of this film. I have no reference point, I have not read the book, which is probably a good thing. The story is interesting. A boy shipwrecked and living on a lifeboat with a tiger. I'm not sure I got all of the references to God, or Krishna, or whatever other religion Pi was practicing at the time. In fact, I'm not sure that this isn't a film about the lack of a "God." It's about the perseverance of a boy and the will to fight to stay alive. God didn't teach him how to read or fish or NOT drink the salt water, those are all lessons learned throughout his life.

Again, I haven't read the book, so I'm a little skeptical about the framing of the film, I'm not a big fan of the, "I'm writing a book, filming a …

Should see it again, with no sleep in the end. ;)

A shipwreck leads Pi Patel to a wonderful journey over the sea water with a zebra, orangutan, hyena and Bengal tiger in a lifeboat. With them, he discovers and realizes the courage within him.

***
Just a disclaimer: I failed to see the entire movie as by the time I sat down in a movie theater to see this film, I was really tired from school and so I fell asleep I think 10 minutes before it ended.

ANYWAY, I would not say that this movie is a crap or whatever. It just that this film directed by Ang Lee did not pull a string from my heart that I did not really got into it. The story, the message of the material is good definitely, but from the opening scenes, I really thought that this one was really made for kids, that I felt like "Hey! I'm not the target audience."

Single thing …

Life of Pi is kind of lame, but worth watching

Looneymanthegreat - wrote on 03/26/2013

Life of Pi is a beautiful movie to look at, but has a fatal flaw that keeps me from liking it as much as the critics seem to.

That flaw is that it doesn’t mean anything. There is no profound message in the story or complex idea, there is a clumsy “coexist” message in the film, but it’s barely recognizable.

Is that wrong? No. It’s perfectly okay for a movie to have a lame message or even no message at all. Some of the best movies ever made have an ambiguous, obscure or non-existent meaning.

Life of pi however tells you straight up that the story is supposed to have a powerful meaning to it, and when it ends it acts like it just blew your mind. It literally tells you that the story is supposed to make you believe in god, but I walked out of the theater being just …

Review: Life of Pi

MikePA - wrote on 03/13/2013

Beautiful, enriching, and emotionally impactful, Life of Pi is cinematic poetry at some of its most authentic. It's a compelling blend of visual effects and storytelling. I watched the film on Blu-ray/3D, and I must say the 3D was jaw-dropping at many points. The visuals are handled incredibly well, used as a storytelling tool and create a massive spectacle. The CGI tiger, Richard Parker, looks outstanding. The only problem I have with the film is the first half hour to forty minutes during which Pi is being developed, which is obviously crucial, but I felt much of it was unneeded, including a relationship with a female and many other scenes that create nothing but a drag. However, once Pi is faced with a shipwreck (one of the film's many great moments) and is later stuck on the life …

2nd half is where it took off...

Lee - wrote on 02/19/2013

Be bold and state your opinion...Is what i keep telling myself as i only gave this film 2 stars as everyone else on this planet seems to be rating it higher. Truth be told that i was only just starting to get into this film when Pi (Suraj Sharma) was thrown into the lifeboat so that leaves about half the movie that i found interesting. I will give kudos for the cinematography here as it was nothing short of breathtaking! Also amazing use of CGI for the tiger oddly named Richard Parker as at times i had to look ever so closely to see if they used a real tiger or not? Life Of Pi is my last film to watch on my trek to see all the films currently nominated for next sunday night Oscar award presentation. So yes i am only giving this 2/4 stars as the second half in my opinion is where the …
