A horror movie that entertains more than it scare. That probably has more to do with having Steven Spielberg on as a producer than anything. I have a feeling if Tobe Hooper was the only one involved it would have been much scarier. The special effects are fantastic, I especially enjoyed the monster that they "pull" out of the closet and the bodies coming out of the ground. It's really a typical haunted house set-up, a house was built on top of a cemetery. Now the ghosts are pissed off and they want revenge. The twist is the television, which is a speaker of sorts to the underworld. Their son annoyed me, he should've been forever sqaushed in the tree. But Craig T. Nelson, as always is great.

The set-up is very simplistic and perhaps a little cliched (Indian burial ground, really?),but the film succeeds because of the inventive and surprising scares the director and effects team string together. The "TV people" scene is an example of the film at its most subtle and effectively creepy, but there are other more obvious "boo" scenes that are equally as frightening.

A suspenseful and fun paranormal movie that serves up some good scares. There is a sweetness to the family that is not seen in horror films these days.

A good horror to not ignore. It's got its own unique appeal. What would you do if your house happens to sit upon the very portals of hell? When I saw this the first time, it scared the living soul out of me. Over time, however, it eventually changed genre from horror to ridiculous. But definitely entertaining.

this film is hilarious- constructions workers get away with catcalling the families daughter. this film almost made me cry- when they are communicating with their daughter through the television. this film made me jump- when that goddamn clown jumped from behind the boy. i knew he was there.

Action: 3/3 + Comedy: 1/2 + Good vs Evil: 1/1 + Love/Sex: 1/1 + Special Effects: 0.5/1 + Plot: 1/1 + Music: 1/1 = 8.5/10 or 85%. Poltergeist premtpts many horror films on a grandiose scale. Pulse, White Noise, and the Ring are but a few that deal with the same subject matter, and they didn't make an appearance until a decade plus after. Poltergeist begins surprisingly as an urban family comedy and then dwelves into a unique journey filled with horror and thrills. The special effects don't all stand the test of time, particularly the maggot scene, but the overall product is a definite must for horror fans.
