This film is essentially an homage, of an homage, of an homage. It's a stale copy of a few specific stylistic agendas all mashed together with little to no substance. Genres represented are: classic Japanese samurai, spaghetti westerns (inspired by the former), and the films of Tarantino (inspired by both formers). The main problem here is that writer/director Miike is not a good copycat. His way of constructing stories and use of dialogue do not fit any of these styles, causing a mess. The addition of Tarantino himself just makes that fact more obvious. The lack of interesting characters or dialogue, and slow pace, makes for an often boring watch.

Full of quirky characters, tongue in cheek humour and cartoon violence, SWD is really a super-stylized gangster movie that's both an affectionate homage and parody of the American western. Reminding me most of the post modern westerns of Robert Rodriguez and Sam Raimi's The Quick And The Dead, this semi-humorous update of a cinematic icon is also quite reminiscent of Takeshi Kitano's Zatoichi.
