Even if it's a little darker than you'd prefer, Jim Carrey makes this "Grinch" adaptation watchable enough.

A dismal live-action adaptation of the classic cartoon. The story elements they added in to make the film feature length were unnecessary and Carey isn't given anything funny to do. Plus, the tone is oddly inconsistent for a family movie.

A completely awful and horrible film version of the children's classic that must have had Dr. Suess rolling in his grave. Everything that Dr. Suess wrote about is completely thrown out the window here, as the choice was obviously made to ignore the themes of the original material and just go crazy.

Sure, there's the basic premise of a mean, old grinch who hates Christmas and wants to ruin it for the Whos of Whoville. Problem is, Jim Carrey's Grinch isn't mean at all, he's a giant goofball that yuks it up as much as possible for laughs. Then there's the Whos. In the book and original cartoon, the Whos aren't materialistic at all, but here they are a bunch of whining, spoiled heathens who want as much as possible. It's not a big deal that their Christmas gets stolen, because they …

Not a bad variation of the cartoon.

While I don't make it a point to watch the live action version every year, I have to say that this variation is not as bad as some would lead you to believe. If you love the cartoon, then you have a 50/50 chance that this will intrigue you. Jim Carrey did the best that he would be able to for his part as the Grinch, and yeah he did play it a little more over the top than most would like because he seemed to be more comic relief than the vileness that the Grinch was supposed to be.
I have to say that this film was a far cry better than the live action "Cat in the Hat" so don't use that one as a basis for comparison if you are trying to decide on weather or not to watch it. Over all kids will like it, most adults will prefer the cartoon that they grew up with, and everyone else will wait …

Review - How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

All the whos down in Whoville liked Christmas a lot, but the Grinch (Jim Carrey), who lived just north of Whoville, did not, and he attempts to destroy the holiday in Dr. Seuss’ “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think director Ron Howard has ever known what he’s doing behind the camera. I don’t think he has a vision as much as a style for his films. I can’t really put all the blame on him though, because about half of this film was improvised by Carrey. This is another example of Carrey trying to hard to be himself. I guess they just wanted to have fun with this one.

I will say that this is one of the few big-budget Hollywood movies with an all-star soundtrack that’s actually worth listening to. All of the songs, performed by …
