Ocean 11 review

Daniel Corleone - wrote on 09/11/2012

This critic recalls having a great time viewing this film. Danny Ocean (George Clooney) meets with Rusty (Brad Pitt) enlists specialist to plan to steal casino's. The team consist of specialists: Linus Caldwell (Matt Damon), a young and talented pick-pocket thief; Frank Catton (Bernie Mac), a casino worker and con man; Virgil and Turk Malloy (Casey Affleck and Scott Caan), mechanics; Livingston Dell (Eddie Jemison) an electronics and surveillance expert; Basher Tarr (Don Cheadle), explosives expert; Saul Bloom (Carl Reiner), a con man; and an acrobat "The Amazing" Yen (Shaobo Qin). Soundtrack, performances and humor were spectacular. Lacks some proper character development for some figures, a solid antagonist and female charmer. One of the best capers around, Ocean 11 delivers in …

Low on Logic, High on Entertainment

Ocean's Eleven is not trying to be a masterpiece. I greatly appreciate this about Ocean's Eleven. It's not trying to be perfect (because it clearly isn't). It's only goal is to provide a very entertaining two hours, in which it succeeds and excels at.

Danny Ocean has just gotten out of prison, and has no intentions of returning to society as a model citizen. Rather, he plans a heist to rob three of Vegas' biggest casinos and loot over 150 million dollars. Of course, this job is too big to do alone. Ocean get's 10 other recruits, for a total of eleven people, making this genius heist.

Ocean's Eleven would like to convince you that there's an emotional core to the film. In fact, there is, in the form of Ocean's ex-wife Tess, whom he is trying to win back. Alas, this romance …

"Ocean's Eleven" by Yojimbo

I've never been able to shake the feeling that I'd done this star-studded caper movie a disservice when I first watched it, and as I watched Clooney and Pitt's great buddy partnership sparkle through the witty and stylish planning of their casino heist, I was convinced I was right. And then Julia Roberts hoved into view. It's not that she's completely dreadful, but she managed to muster absolutely zero chemistry, which considering she was paired with Mr. Sauve himself, is quite an achievement. The execution of the heist is also lacking the humour of the earlier part of the film and so looks like something out of Mission: Impossible. Add the niggles of Andy Garcia's characterless villain and Don Cheadle's painful mockney accent and I think 3 stars was fair after all. But it is an …

Rat Pack Remake @ #46

mdtinney - wrote on 05/29/2009

2001's "Ocean's Eleven" is by far the best remake of any film; most notably one that starred the Rat Pack (Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Dean Martin...). Steven Soderbergh (who obviously understood the remake guidelines) wisely took a breezy cool 1960 piece of worthless film and made it even better. How? Simple. He upped the charm factor. In this case, the charm came from George Clooney (in the Sinatra role). Clooney plays ex-con Daniel Ocean with the right blend of subtle sweetness and diabolical snakiness. His warped plan to rob three Las Vegas casinos in the dead of night couldn't have worked if at least he and his ten cohorts couldn't convince us (the audience) that they could do it. I mean, let's face it. The only way that heist could've gone down is if it was funded by a big shot …

Oceans bunch appears at #33......

I knew this was going to be a hit when it was announced- both leading men (George Clooney and Brad Pitt) are two of my favorites and I couldn't wait to see them work together. Little did I know that they would be supported by such a huge cast (Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, Andy Garcia, Don Cheadle, Casey Affleck, Bernie Mac, Elliott Gould and Carl Reiner) and just how cool the ride would be. Soderbergh gets a good script here and with Danny Ocean (Clooney) leading the way it really does make for a fun time. The online chemistry in the movie was good enough (even though it is a remake) to bring on Oceans 12 and 13 a few years later- and although they too were entertaining they both failed to live up to the original. A great caper from the moment it begins.........
