As a thriller, "Witness" follows the step-by-step playbook of all the best classics.

Beautifully shot and expertly directed by Peter Weir, Harrison Ford delivers one of his greatest performances of his career. Joined by Kelly McGillis as the winsome Amish widow who draws his eye and newcomer Lukas Hass as her son who sees a horrible crime by happenstance. This entails police officer John Book (Ford) to go undercover within the tightknit community to keep them safe before trial. A lesser filmmaker would have dialed up the sex and violence while belittling the Amish culture. Weir respects both them and the audience by refraining from such indulgences and instead crafts something that works as an engaging thriller and a sweet romance.

Just an plodding, boring movie about a child who witnesses a murder and the cultural differences between the child's family (Amish) and the detective on the case (not Amish). Nothing particularly noteworthy. I actually watched it in a class exploring cultural differences in society. It is a task to watch, not unlike doing homework.

Enjoyable stranger in a strange land witness protection drama that threw a spotlight on the Amish communities of the mid west. Some nice characterization and proof that Ford can act.

This is a by-the-books thriller that is made more interesting by compelling portrayals by Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis in the love story that occupies much of the middle portion of the film. The action scenes are tense and understated, but the film succeeds in being more than just an average thriller.

It's the type of movie that has drama, crime and romance, but never feels cliche. It rises above expectations due to the writing and sincere performance from Harrison Ford.

I adore this sublimely directed film, yet I do hate its score ever so much. I suppose you can't win 'em all, though.

Witness is a very underrated film, that the greater part of today's generation probably has not seen. It is easily one of Harrison Ford's best performances, in similar regards with "Regarding Henry", "Blade Runner", and the Indiana Jones series. The story is very compelling and in good company with the highest class of films in the 80's.
