"Sunshine" by Yojimbo

Danny Boyle's latest sees the crew of the Icarus 2 delivering a nuclear device to try and restart our dying sun. The concept is a kind of grown up (well, young adult) version of Armageddon, for the first hour it has a striking resemblance to 2010, and for the final third it shifts gear and becomes a spacebound slasher flick in a similar vein to Event Horizon. The cast is certainly above par for this kind of hokey sci-fi, but I couldn't shake the feeling I'd come in half way through; there is little build up, and the script spends all it's time manufacturing drama full of races against time giving the audience little time to get to know the characters. This makes it very difficult to care when they make their inevitable and noble self sacrifices. It has some very pretty imagery, but …

Sunshine review

A film about Earth’s condition because of a dying Sun. The crews of Icarus II make valuable decisions that would either hamper their mission or save a few lives from Icarus I. Its features inside Icarus II are enough to keep the viewers entertained. The talented international cast brings the realism to this smart science fiction/drama/thriller of a picture. Cillian Murphy (the physicist Robert Capa) can really hold his own; Michelle Yeoh was delightful as Corazon (the biologist), Chris Evans as Mace (the engineer) and many more. Some minor blemishes come to mind like the character of Mark Strong, Pinbacker, who was burned due to numerous exposures to the Sun. Right from that point, the realism was gone. The abrupt ending didn’t work well for me either. So much emphasis was …

Aworth while movie!

Hey just watched the movie there on telly and let me start by saying I am not a big fan of space movies especially ones set solely on a cold spaceship however sunshine managed to avoid all that I dislike about those movies an was completely entertaining! One of the things I liked about it was that it was realistic(well as realistic as a movie like this could be!)everyone on the ship was 100% for the missions success and they all knew they were expendable if needs be. I agree with the other reviews though, the horror bit at the end was unnecessary, and the film was doing fine without it, didnt ruin the film as the bad guy wasn't in it for too long but I think you can either go completely one way if your going to go horror and not half and half, didn't know or care about this bad guy he was …

Brilliant Until the Last Thirty Minutes

Franz Patrick - wrote on 03/01/2008

"2001: A Space Odyssey" definately influenced this film. From the stalled silences to the flashing of faces on the screen for a millisecond, this reeks of grand science fiction. The Achilles' heel of this film is the last thirty minutes. In the attempt to increase the tension as the characters reach the sun, it hybridized with the horror genre. Unfortunately, it didn't work for a few reasons. One, the supposed villain did not have any sort of background and we can barely see his appearance (at times the Not Seeing Villain technique works but it did not in this instance). Two, the film did not need any more tension because it was exciting enough. Although some awkward camera angles and shots did work, most of them didn't because they greatly contrasted with the elegance of the first hour …

How Hot is the Sun?

Alex - wrote on 08/23/2007

[Update: I recently saw this movie again on the small screen. Though it is not quite as good as it was on the big screen, the sense of space, dedication and sacrifices is all there. Simply put, this movie is one of the best sci-fi's ever made. Beautiful. Oh, and it is the best movie of 2007 (for me anyway)]

If you did not like 2001, Solaris, or The Fountain you may not like this movie. I am just saying.

Once in a while there are some really interesting philosphical sci fi movies that come out. In the last 12 months we had 2. While both are very different their premise is the same. Make it beautiful and make you think. Sunshine is a work of art - though how well done it is we can only tell by multiple viewings.

I admit, there are a few cliches and a few direct references …

Sunshine is the Sci-fi, action, adventure, horror, drama that I never wanted. Simply put this movie tried to wear too many hats, and the end result wasn't all that sunny.

The movie is broken into 3 distinct parts:

The first part was mainly character development and back story. The dialog was a bit forced and some scenes just seemed a little unnecessary since you would have figured it out by watching it. The major problem I have with this first part is the length, it was over half the movie. There was nice part to the start though, the computer that was running the ship, appropriately named "Icubus", had the hottest voice. At first I thought one of the main characters was having futuristic phone sex, but no... it was just the ship.

The next part was the horror. Yes, you read …
