Based on the novel that I should but I didn't, A freelance journalist for a no-name Caribbean newspaper finds himself at a critical juncture in his life when he must decide a course in his life while surrounded by a group of people bent on self-destruction. this movie lacks on story and yes this is base of a novel that I never read but the movie lacked on story for me.

Johnny Depp is not as annoying as he has been recently. I felt this movie was more understandable than fear and loathing but not as interesting. Worth a rent but don’t expect much.

Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp) was assigned to to write for The San Juan Star. He becomes involved with Chenault (Amber Heard). The plot and characters were dull and confusing. It showed the beauty of the location if only the structure of the story were better. Rum Diary had a good script with unfortunately bad direction.
