A thoughtful and often shockingly violent Western. The Australian outback setting at once sets it apart from other films in the genre. The script, by Nick Cave, is poetic and insightful and the film is unflinching in its examination of saints and sinners alike. Haunting and very memorable. One of the best films of 2005.

The slow pace shouldn't both anyone other than those with the attention span of a gnat. After all, the Aussie outback was hardly noted for its frenetic pace. My only misgivings were in the casting: we are told that the leader of the gang is a half-man, half-dog psychopath but what we get is cuddly Danny Houston. This apart, it's a terrific, brooding piece of work. An homage for which Leone would surely be grateful.

The characters are interesting, and the dialogue clever, but the relationships between the characters weren't quite there; it seemed like a collection of self consciously cool individuals and situations rather than a narrative flow. It's very low key in a similar way to The Assassination Of Jesse James and the sudden …
