Martin Scorsese trades the darkness and volatile characters of his predeceasing films like "Goodfellas" and "Taxi Driver" for the subtlety and class found in this gossipy period-piece.

There are some excellent character moments here, pulled out of the societal norms of the period. I sometimes feel, however, that these better moments from Scorsese, get lost in the scope of the film, which has the tendency to drag with its long running time.
