Plot Outline:

A group of upper middle class Italians takes a boating trip, stopping on an isolated island. One of their party goes missing, and her best friend and lover stay behind to look for her. Eventually, however, all parties concerned move on in this study of bourgeois decadence and ennui.

The pacing of this film is a little slow and the plot is sort of obtuse, which makes the film hard to get into. I would the last third, however, is a master of combining surreal elements with an atmosphere of intrigue and really propels the conclusion forward.

Italian auteur Michelangelo Antonioni established himself as a poet for the first time since he released the first audacious part of his unofficial "Incommunicability Trilogy", which also included the films La Notte (1961) and L'Eclisse (1962). Whereas the subsequent two parts focused on unsuccessful love relationships because of the incapability of owning a respectful empathy and its impact on a surrounding society of snobbishness and delicacies, L'Avventura is a tale of thought-provoking exploration.
