Utterly nutty horror-comedy that even throws in a bit of social commentary with its lunacy. It almost plays like a version of 'Home Alone' but if it was written by Stephen King.

A sort of Home Alone rip-off, with a kidnapping plot thrown in. The trailer made this movie out to be some kind of terrifying cannibal fest with horrible mutilations as hands reach through the walls to rip people apart. That and the name itself with the tag line, "They will cross the street, do anything to avoid the house with.. the people under the stairs..." The director should have dispensed with the light-hearted comedy feel and the plucky young children heroes and made it a dark and gristly *horror* film about cannibals living under the stairs.

Wes Craven doesn't get near enough appreciation for this twisted, scary and humorous little film. With great acting performances from the lead kids and plenty of pleasant over the top antics from the lead villains the movie is both entertaining and delivers plenty of suspense. I saw this recently and was pleasantly surprised how well this held up.

this has to be Wes Craven's best film, besides "scream".many people didn't like this as much, but i love this film.the story, the plot, the style, the characters,i loved everything about this film.it truly delivered on every basis.check this movie out.who cares what people say, cause remember, when people say a movie is bad,it's actually good.Wes Craven is truly still the master of suspence.

Crazy adults running a booby trapped house, with indescribable people living in the basement, makes for an odd and slightly funny film. The (hero) kid is one to root for.

I can remember when this movie came out and parts of the trailer. But, I don't remember much of the actual movie itself. I do remember thinking, though, that it's just your typical horror flick.

This isn't a flawless film, however, it is a good mix of horror and dark comedy. The acting is generally OK, the real standout is the house itself - it's the Addams Family meets the Manson Family. Good for a look.
