A sentimental allegory of the modernization of the West and a condemnation of American obstructionists in the form of a vicious outlaw, "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" separates itself from the most conventional westerns of the time with dramatic grace.

It would've been a much better movie if it wasn't for the racism in it. I just love Andy Devine though.

Not as good as I heard or thought it was gonna be.Even with all the big names, (It even had Uncle Jessie from Dukes Of Hazzard in a small role) It was boring.I think the best thing about it was Lee Marvin as the town bully Liberty Valance.Andy Devine as the sheriff was OK at 1st but it got old & annoying after awhile

The spark in this classic Western comes from the charisma and character revealed in the leads. John Ford supposedly shot this entire film on a soundstage because of budget constraints, so it is missing the characteristic Western panoramic colorful photography. However, shooting the film on simple sets in simple black and white photography allows the themes, rich dialogue, and character moments to shine through. The film is never boring and often very powerful at times, which says a lot about its story and content.

I believe the word "pilgrim" is heard about 1 billion times in this film. The acting is top notch, Lee Marvin, Wayne, Stewart, etc...are great. The film is only average until the final 15 mins. or so. That's when we find out why a Senator is at an ordinary man's funeral.

A vastly different western than usually seen from the director or the actors. It has a dark streak that makes it different and makes it memorable. I really liked this one because unlike many westerns it does not fail due to a poor villain this one has Liberty Valance played well by Lee Marvin. It also deals well with the ideas of public image versus reality, and the politics involved.

I have only seen this movie one time and I admit that that's a mistake. James Stewart does show a good range in acting in this film and John Wayne was his usual self. But, this movie does not mount up to a great shoot-em up movie like "The Searchers." It is a western, but not what I was expecting.
