Joaquin Phoenix's portrayal of the country music legend is career defining, and completes this understated biopic.

Roger Ebert said this about the film and I completely agree with him: "The music is great, the drama is great, the writing is great, the performances are great, I love it!" Joaquin Phoenix gives a brilliant performance as Johnny Cash, and Reese Witherspoon gives the performance of her career!

Proving that his method actor ways are successful, Joaquin Phoenix disappears into the iconic role of Johnny Cash. His presence commands every scene, which is to the film's benefit, as it falls plague to the common biopic error of appearing too episodic. And, of course, those songs...

The story of rock'n'roll country singer Johnny Cash, from humble beginnings and childhood tragedy, through to stardom and drug addiction. All the standard music biopic ingredients are here, juxtaposing the glamour of rock stardom with the drudgery of home-life set to a suitably fine soundtrack. Cash fans will enjoy seeing the context from which his songs sprung, but the rest of us will find little we haven't seen many times before in various other films. The performances are all strong and technically it can't be faulted aside from the fact it could've stood to lose 20 minutes in the middle. Well made but otherwise unexceptional.

I just never felt that Cash deserved Carter's love. Which is a problem, because in reality I think he did. Ultimately a letdown, maybe my hopes were too high. Reese Witherspoon's effervesence redeemes it though, to some degree.

The perfect biography of any musician. On top of that, it boasts the perfect portrayal any musician, especially one as important as Johnny Cash. Joaquin Phoenix is brilliant in the role and Reese Witherspoon is equally amazing as June Carter, John's future wife. It is to the 2000s what Raging Bull is to the 80s.

A pretty good movie that gives you a taste of what the 1950s were about. Really good movie that I could watch a million times.
