Not sure if the narrative is an intelligent fantasy mosaic or just an unfocused mess. But I know for a fact it's a beautiful film, with an ambitious if also kinda sloppy insight into a woman's psyche.

I think, if you suspend your belief in plot and just enjoy Fellini's unique visual skill, the film is a delight. I liken it to taking a stroll through an art museum, because each scene has its own visual and artistic merits and beauty.

I was expecting better, but neither is this Fellini's worst film. Guiletta both the character and actress seem silly to me.

Juliet of the Spirits review

"Love thy wife as thy self." A very lush and color film about infidelity and loyalty. Juliet (Giulietta Masina) was surprised by the anniversary gift of Giorgio (Mario Pisu). The maestro and Giulietta tinker with the spirit of the glass. Score was lovely and locations were pleasant to the eyes. The elegant and bright costumees were noteworthy and performance of Masina was earnest. Some notable lines from Valentina - "We've become so complicated. So civilized," Headmaster - "You're behavior is unacceptable." The abrupt conclusion and pace seems to be a hindrance to the overall experience. It lacks that certain entertainment value of La Dolce Vita or an 8 1/2. Juliet of the Spirits was not as funny or entertaining as the other directors works, it's one of the most stylish though.

"Are you real, yes or no?"

As I watched Juliet of the Spirits, Fellini's follow-up to the magnificent 8 1/2, I was reminded chiefly of The Cell, Tarsem Singh's bizarre 2000 Jennifer Lopez thriller. This may at first seem odd--The Cell, after all, is a disturbing horror/crime film while Juliet of the Spirits is a comedy/drama for which the word "Fellini-esque" seems to have been coined. What both films have in common is their creation of visually sumptuous worlds not justified by their contents. There is a lot to like about Fellini's first color work. It is full of life, full of bright costumes and stunning scenery and compositions (sometimes too bright and stunning). It has all the hallmarks of Fellini's great works (La Strada, La Dolce Vita, 8 1/2, Amarcord): the floating camera, the jaunty lyricism, the …
