A fascinating mystery surrounding Beethoven's unknown lover cannot sustain this familiar paint-by-numbers biopic. Gary Oldman is excellent as the talented but troubled composer. The movie begins promisingly enough and although the plot becomes a series of vignettes, it's initially entertaining. But then the film becomes gradually more unpleasant and gloomy to sit through. The darkest cloud hanging over IMMORTAL BELOVED is that the film clearly wants to be like AMADEUS. Unfortunately, it is not.

A problematic film but it contains a great performance by Gary Oldman.

Fiction about Beethoven. Sad and sometimes hard to watch. I burst into tears several times from the beauty of the music.
