Director Sam Raimi lends his manic style towards this exciting sequel to the 2016 Marvel movie DOCTOR STRANGE. And boy does it show. This movie was much more self-confident and not afraid to get weird or straight up scary. Finally, some proper horror elements were brought to the MCU. Benedict Cumberbatch remains a fine fit for Stephen Strange while Elizabeth Olsen flexes her starpower as the captivating but dangerous Scarlet Witch. The movie wastes no time jumping from one wild action beat to the next. There's a huge setpiece that features a lot of cameos that fans will appreciate.

It's not my favorite multiverse movie of either this year (Everything Everywhere All at Once) or last (Spider-Man: No Way Home), But "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" is a still a fun and visually stunning return for veteran Sam Raimi that opens plenty of potentially expansive new doors for the MCU.

Doctor Strange 2 - Review

“The best surgeon and the best superhero. But you still didn't get the girl.”

‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ feels like two different versions desperately clashing with each other. It’s almost at war with itself. Most of the movie is very much a Sam Rami movie, yet the other half is the usual, self-contained, often safe, Marvel movie, where we didn’t have many multiverses as anticipated, but there was a lot of madness. ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ is an excellent example of delivering a chaotic multi-layered film while still delivering on its title and telling a moving story.

So, despite that little critique at the start, I still liked the movie. As for now, this is probably the best-directed Marvel movie in terms of camera movement, scene …

A Scary Good Trip with Raimi at the Helm

Sam Raimi has done something spectacular - given the MCU something different. Raimi brings his blend of horror and humor to give the Multiverse of Madness its own unique flavor and while it may not be the pinnacle of the franchise, it's certainly still near the top of the Marvel heap bringing plenty of chills - and some nice came appearances - along the way.

The Strange sequel starts off with a bang - and with a new characters in America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) - who, teaming up with a new Doctor Strange variant (Benedict Cumberbatch) - is trying to escape from a shifty demonic creature. The duo are after a very important book - but things take a turn and it seems for a moment this Strange is willing to sacrifice America for the greater good - and that's when we see her power. Chavez …

Just What the Doctor Ordered

Make no mistake, this is still an MCU movie, so you're going to get a colour palette with non-existent blacks, scenes that serve to set-up subsequent films instead of serving the current one, and actors standing in front of greenscreens and trying to look worried. HOWEVER, Raimi brings such jour de vivre to this movie that I don't care. There are more interesting camera angles and editing tricks in this film alone than the collective runtime of all previous 27 MCU films. Bolstered by a great performance by Elizabeth Olsen, the pace is fast enough and the action engaging enough that you can forgive the mostly uninteresting line-up of personalities assembled before you.

Traditionally the only true strength these films have had has been in their characters, so it's refreshing to see an …
