Although not as unwatchable as "Warcraft," another awful video game adaptation we saw in 2016, "Assassin's Creed" is still an action-packed drag with a confusing and unimaginative plot.

I have not played any of the Assassin's Creed games, but apparently they changed enough that I guess it doesn't matter. Despite a talented cast, a good eye for detail and some great locations - Assassin's Creed is pretty dull. It's too bad - it has all the elements to be exciting and succeed but, much like Prince of Persia, just can't quite connect the dots. A decent enough action film, but the meandering plot and exposition ruins things. Maybe I should be glad they never got around to making a Bioshock movie - I'm sure they would have ruined that too.

"Assassin's Creed" by Yojimbo

A convicted murderer awakens from the execution chamber to find himself subject to an experimental procedure that enables him to relive the memories of his ancestors.
Assassin's Creed follows the formula of the videogame franchise it is based upon to the letter. It's an action adventure set in a beautifully realized Medieval past, punctuated by a modern day setting characterized by clunky exposition, sci-fi mumbo jumbo and poor dialogue in general. Michael Fassbender actually makes quite a strong and suitably intense protagonist and the scenes set in the past are atmospherically shot, nicely choreographed and the production design throughout is impressive. When the two plot threads intertwine for the final act it initially works quite well, but the plot suddenly shudders to a halt …

Just watch Prince of Persia instead.

Imagine the pitch: Assassins and the Knights Templar use technology to settle old scores by assuming the identities of their ancestors via cutting edge computer simulation. Basically the Crusades being fought inside the Matrix. That sounds awesome.
And yet the movie is shockingly dull, flat, and boring. Once they actually use the machine and go back in time to 15th century Spain, it's exciting, intense, and has a spark of life to it. The director, Justin Kurzel, has an eye for action despite this being his first big budget movie. Why not revel in it and skip all the expository nonsense? This movie is two and a half hours long and thirty minutes at best are spent in the past. Which of course is the best part of the movie.
The cast is the best ever assembled for a video game movie. …
