A study of a young man's conscience, but not just any young man. John Ford's biographical portrait of Abraham Lincoln's life before the presidency is a tender affair.

Henry Fonda gives an early performance that is one of his career's best. He manages to embody the self-effacing, intelligent, people-pleasing nature of Lincoln in his early days. There aren't many clever nods to Lincoln's presidential future (a lesser director might have been tempted to insert some), but the film demonstrates, above all, the great President's honest character, through a bombastic murder trial.

Good movie by a good director (John Ford) and a good lead actor (Henry Fonda) who manages to look exactly like Abe!
