The Irishman is a gangster epic centred upon the life of an Irish truck driver who rises through the ranks of organized crime to become the right hand man of notorious union boss Jimmy Hoffa.

Best described as a cross between Goodfellas and JFK, The Irishman reunites many of the familiar faces from the acclaimed gangster classics of his past, as well as adding the current crop of screen heavies such as Stephen Graham and Bobby Canavale from Boardwalk Empire. As such it’s a positive smorgasbord of mobsters and with Scorsese’s heritage, it has a lot to live up to. And because of this, despite the heavyweight cast and interesting subject matter I did have a few problems with it. Firstly, the sheer age of its stars. The Irishman was my 15th Martin Scorsese film, and like so many others it gets 10/10 from me. A masterpiece of film making, with an excellent story told with such class with an amazing cast of legends Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci & Al Pacino and lovely to see Harvey Keitel get involved too. The cinematic quality with its superb, script, soundtrack and acting and possibly the greatest achievement is the mind-blowing way at which the de-aging visual effects are just stunning in there sheer brilliance. As a Netflix release, it doesn't hurt to watch it in two parts given its length, which is long, but I honestly wouldn't cut any of it. The only regret is that it marks the end of an era, given Scorsese, De Niro, Pesci & Pacino are 70 odd and Keitel now 80 years old. This film is surely already a …

It’s a great day when you get to see a new Martin Scorsese movie, but a new gangster movie staring some of one of the greatest actors that have ever bless cinema, now that’s killing two birds with one bullet. I’ve said this many times before, but whenever Scorsese releases a new movie - I’m there, as I have 100% faith he will deliver something so crafted in style where his passion to create a fresh new experience for audience to slip right back into loving movies. And Scorsese has made another masterpiece.
