As smart as "The Host" is, its scattershot story simultaneously takes itself too seriously and not serious enough to make its overall message as effective as it should be.

By setting the monster in a believable and paranoid setting and choosing to focus on the characters it throws into peril, this film stays away from general campiness and actually manages to be tense and exciting from start to finish. And, wow, that CGI monster looks good.

The first twenty minutes of this got me paying attention. The initial approach of the monster felt like something that might happen in real life. The idea of something coming to get us is ancient and it still gets us. This is a watchable film.

Skirts the line between Godzilla & Jaws - it can be humorous and other times filled with tension. I loved the main actors - a dysfunctional family, yet very caring. Though the U.S. is made out to be an evil power, it's still a good film.
