It will grind your senses

Robert Rodriguez' Planet Terror is the first 85-min feature film, and Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof is the second in this 190-minute marathon of blood, guts, extreme violence and sheer audaciousness. Binding the two main features are three faux trailers for other upcoming Grindhouse features including Rob Zombie's "Werewolf Women of the S.S." (which is self-explanatory), Edgar Wright's "Don't" (a haunted house pic with amusing voiceover narration), and Eli Roth's "Thanksgiving" (the best of the bunch, about a homicidal maniac that goes on a killing spree around the holidays) and opening the film is Robert Rodriguez' hilarious trailer for "Machete" that features Rodriguez favorite Danny Trejo and Cheech Marin going ballistic with violent revenge against drug dealers. One can't help …

And the winner of Grindhouse is...Planet Terror!

Planet Terror, the fake trailers, and Kurt Russell get 4 stars from me. Unfortunately for them, the rest of Death Proof gets zero stars. Planet Terror is excatly what it should be. A crazy zombie movie featuring a girl with a machine gun leg and non-stop action. The fake trailers are awesome. Then comes Death Proof. A plodding bore fest from the man who's apparently the new king of plodding bore fests, Quentin Tarantino. More foot fetish crap, more pop culture references, and women empowerment. The kind of empowerment in which women leave their friends with strange men so that they can race a car because it reminds them of a movie. Yeah. All this wrapped up in with two action scenes comprising about 20 minutes of total film time. Kurt Russell is great. Unfortunately he's only in it for …

The Grindhouse Style Brought to Life!

I have never heard of a Grindhouse movie. I guess the concept makes sense and the idea of a late night horror movie in a crappy part of a big city sounds scary enough. With a complex idea like ?Grindhouse? I think it is important to keep in mind the experience rather than the quality of the movie. Remember, they are supposed to represent the Grindhouse.

Planet Terror: This is the better one of the two (in almost every way). Rodriguez is an action genius and he shows it. He is also very clever in how he shoots scenes and can make actors and actresses better than they are. Most of the actors in this movie are paper thin (which matters none) with the exception of Freddy Rodriguez and Rose McGowen who are very good on screen together. To Me, Freddy is a good actor and could become …

A Return to the Glorious, Gruesome Grindhouse

Chris Kavan - wrote on 04/11/2007

When I first heard about Grindhouse, I was immediately intrigued. Here we have two of my favorite directors collaborating on a twofer film that was a throwback to B-movie grindhouse heaven.

I knew what I was getting into, but I had no idea how fun it would really be. Most people probably wouldn?t consider exploding heads, bursting boils, gruesome car crashes, loss of limbs and other assorted gore very fun? but I?m not most people

First up is Planet Terror ? Robert Rodriguez directed this homage to zombies and chicks with guns. Just like any great grindhouse flick, the characters are over-the-top, the dialogue is laughably bad (intentionally) at points and the film keeps the pops, scratches and even a missing reel. The action is non-stop and there are some truly sick scenes ? I …
