As inspired as it is unconventional, "Ghost Dog" is brilliant.

It's classic Kurosawa samurai action set in a modern-day city. Forest Whitaker is excellent as the relatively silent warrior living by his own code, following a mob boss who saved his life. The pacing is slow, but I believe this is deliberate as the film has an almost lyrical quality punctuated by intense violence. Stick with it, because it's worth the effort.

Jim Jarmusch crafts a modern-day homage to both "Man in Black" westerns and Kurosawa samurai films. The simple story structure is deceiving, because the film manages to explore themes of virtue and honor, but it does so with conserved dialogue, striking visual images, and a masterful use of soundtrack.

I thought it'd be a little bit better. But hey, it was still a good movie.

There is something about this movie that I really enjoy. Whitaker is a star and this movie proves it. The music along with the limited dialog caught me in awe of the way this one is directed. This one is for patient people - but I love it.
