Captain Marvel - Review

"Space invasion, big car chase... truth be told, I was ready to hang it up. 'Till I met you today."

One year later - nobody's talking about this, expect for me right now. All that fuss and name calling over an average by the book superhero movie.

One of the blandest and most forgettable movies of last year, which I just remembered to login as watched.

Brie Larson, who has proven in the past to be a talented actress with amazing range, but is unfortunately the weakest link in the movie. I thought her performance was incredibly wooden and the least interesting part of the movie. Her line delivery felt really off and there wasn't anything there for me to care about her character. All backstory with very little depth. It might have just been the poor material she was given to work …

"Captain Marvel" by Yojimbo

A foot soldier on the front line of an intergalactic war between the alien Kree Empire and a race of shape-shifters finds herself stranded on Earth, but when the lost memories of her previous life start to return she begins to question her role in the conflict.

Captain Marvel is essentially the bridge between the two halves of their Magnum Opus and introduces a key character in the Avengers’ war against Thanos. But rather than a high-minded, pompous affair, the story is a more personal journey of self-discovery for a very Earth-bound everywoman. The 1990’s setting is perfect for that of an original Riot Grrrl discovering her girl power and the soundtrack reflects this in a nicely nostalgic way. There is able support from Samuel L. Jackson who brings humour and warmth in his role …

Captain Marvel Flies High

The MCU has been around so long (11 years now, people) that origin stories seem blasé and tedious at this point. But don't count out those origin stories just yet, because Captain Marvel manages to make something old seem new again - and not just because its takes place in the 90s and has plenty of throwbacks to that distinctive era.

No, Captain Marvel succeeds more thanks to an interesting story, powerful connections and, despite so much trolling, a fantastic turn from Brie Larson. Plus, Disney and Marvel keeps things light without being too comedic, with plenty of fun moments and the wonderful introduction of a character who certainly deserves their own movie - Goose the cat. And, unlike most origin stories, our hero already has her powers at the start of the film - most of the …

Captain Marvel soars OK but can't land perfectly.

Marvel's newest movie starring their first female superhero is a winner that soars thanks to a strong leading performance by Brie Larson and a twisty take on the ever tiresome origin story. Taking inspiration from 90s science fiction thrillers like Men in Black, Species, and a little visual flair from the likes of ID4 and The Fifth Element, the action moves from planet to planet as the half human/half alien soldier Carol Danvers goes on avital mission to thwart a sinister extraterrestrial race.
Carol Danvers (Larson) is an elite member of the special forces overseen by the powerful Kree empire who are locked in battle with the shapeshifting aliens known as the Skrulls. Unfortunately, she is plagued by nightmares suggesting a past life on Earth so she teams up with the human secret …
