David Lynch makes a surprisingly empathetic movie about an unloved soul that manages to overcome its Academy Award bait moments.

David Lynch leaves the abstract at the door to tell a straightforward and heartfelt tale of one man's attempts at triumphing over his disability. John Hurt gives an amazing and emotional performance under pounds of makeup and the film's black and white cinematography is a rich choice for such a compelling story.

A timeless classic that has everything going for it - fantastic acting; a sad, compelling story; and great cinematography. A must watch.

I don't like Lynch. But I love so much when he leaves the surrealism to the masters (Buñuel) and makes easy movies that turned to be timeless. Technically fantastic and one of the best adaptions ever from book. The acting is top notch. Strong manifiesto against racism.

Not quite good enough to become a good movie. The intensions are there but it is too slow and the way the story is told could have been better.
