"The Wolfman" by Yojimbo

An American actor returns to his ancestral home to investigate the death of his brother to be confronted by a murderous supernatural creature. Props to The Wolfman for avoiding the temptation to transpose the story to modern day America, but for all its gothic intentions, it's still just another CGI wankathon that is far more interested in superhero-style set pieces and gore than atmosphere and suspense. Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins are both superb actors but both weigh in with easily their worst performances in a "serious" film I've ever seen (during their final confrontation I couldn't help thinking of Teen Wolf) and the comic strip approach just doesn't work in the context of such a po-faced interpretation of the material. On the plus side, the transformation scenes were quite …

Stylish yet cheesy remake!

The Wolfman brings back Universal's classic horror-icon back now more amped up that before. The A-list cast consisting of Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins and Hugo Weaving give a strong back bone to what is essentially a very entertaining movie. Stylistically the film achieves its own interesting atmosphere with the dark late 19th century look and the psychedelic mind effects. At times the more psychedelic moments do seem to cross the point of unintentional hilarity but the effort is still quite good.
Looking from the view-point of horror films The Wolfman is very weak on suspense. The movie resorts to making the audience jump with sudden, loud audio-bursts and with the unexpected appearance of people, animals etc. This is a very cheap method and I felt it crossed to the point of …

Not original, but stunning

Can an unoriginal film ever be classified as a great film? That is the question posed with “The Wolfman”. It can definitely be a good film, but nothing that is worthy of the highest praise. Of course, there are always exceptions, but “The Wolfman” does not feel as though it is. However, it is by no means a bad film. Joe Johnston does a great job at making a well made film out of an idea that has been done over and over in the past 100 years of film. In this 2010 version of “The Wolfman” (there have been numerous films relating the werewolves and wolf men over the years, too many to list here), Lawrence Talbot (Benicio del Toro) returns to his childhood town of Blackmoor in England to investigate the death of his brother. He is confronted with his father (Anthony Hopkins), who …

I see a Full Moon rising....

Alas, I am long overdue with my official review of the remake of a classic; Universal monster 'The Wolfman'. Of course, spoilers are contained within.

Originally made in 1941 by Universal Pictures as part of a new rising of monster movies; this is often credited as a launching movie for Lon Chaney Jr. (often billed as just Lon Chaney) but not to be confused with his father; of the same name.

I am going to just come out and say what a lot of people (sadly) are not saying. I loved this movie. My admiration of this movie has only grown since I saw it nearly 2ish weeks ago. I am quite certain I will probably end up going to see it again in the theaters before it's gone.

The most common word I had seen in reviews describing this movie was 'boring'. So, when I went to see the …

a howling good film (I couldn't resist)

I liked this movie
definitely rated R due to gore. There's decapitations, entrails being strewn about the moors, and creatures being set on fire.
the make up was done by Rick Baker. Who you movie geeks (like me) will know from his work in Planet of the Apes, Mighty Joe Young, Gorillas in the Mist, Men in Black, and An American Werewolf in London. The last one being the one he won the oscar for in the first year that make-up was a competitive field. And that is why I admire Rick Baker very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very much.
(bonus points if you know what movie that's a reference from)
One of my friends noticed that Benecio (as the werewolf) never kills any women.
If you have seen An American Werewolf in London, its very …

Pure Terror

What do you get when you mix highly acclaimed actors, a terrible plot, and stupid costumes? Well, you get what I would call a "horror" movie. It's very confusing when good actors do bad movies. To be honest, I'm ashamed that I am even able to write a review on this film. I was dragged to the theatre to go see this, and I was hoping that I would be pleasantly surprised. Nope. The movie is just as terrible as I thought it would be. I actually fell asleep watching this film. Now, you may be thinking, "That doesn't mean anything. People fall asleep in the theatre all the time--even when it's a good movie." Correct you are. However, how many people do you know who actually TRIED falling asleep. I couldn't wait for it to be over.

The movie starts out with some man running through the …
