Drive (2011)

Incredible Film

It isn't often that I immediately put a movie in my top 100 on the first viewing. The last time I did that was when I saw The Dark Knight the first time. It has happened again.

Plot: Don't be confused. This movie is not much of an action movie, it is more of a style movie. When I compare it to other films, I think "No Country For Old Men" but with a more simple story.

Acting: The film moves along slowly, with a few action scenes sprinkled through out the film. The entire movie is set up by Gosling's performance as a minimalist talker, true to his word. He obviously has serious issues, but don't care, just as he continues to be the hero.

Style/Cinematography: Very well shot. Each scene is interesting and full of detail. You could tell the direction was meticulous and purposeful. I love intelligently styled movies and this is on the lines of a Tarantino flick or some other master of detail. From clothing, to camera shots to music to cut scenes - awesome.

Music: Perfect. It adds to the overall tone of the film. Though nothing really recognizable to me, I loved the soundtrack. This is one thing that can usually set a film up for greatness and it succeeds.

There are some very odd scenes, violent scenes, and slow moving scenes. All of this is perfect for the overall film. Do not go into this movie hoping for Fast and the Furious. Sit back, relax and enjoy a rare gem these days. I don't think it will be up for any awards as Hollywood will view it too simple and too violent. But it should be.

Drive Review comment

I totally agree. I went in just expecting a good time and it ended up being one of the best movies I've seen all year. I like great surprises at the cinema.
