*Spoilers alert* Uhh It had nothing to do with 'a guy breaking up with her'. How about the fact that she is a faerie and had her wings removed. The fact that she could fly and be free for the majority of her life and to have them removed which was obviously incredibly painful as well. I wouldn't say that I like Pines much more than Spring Breakers, I gave them both 3.5/4. I liked the connection in Pines with the sons meeting later in life, and Gosling is one of my favorite actors, so I'm probably biased towards anything he is in. I'd like the music alot as well in Pines.
