Quando preparado com tino e bom-senso, evitando-se o ensimesmamento autobiográfico, o acerto de contas do autor com o passado potencializa a milagrosa capacidade da arte cinematográfica de conectar pessoas distantes, por meio da identificação com situações universais. Sheridan furta-se a repetir a impetuosidade dramática imprimida à sua maior realização - Em Nome do Pai -, mesclando tópicos variados (dinâmica familiar, perdas, amadurecimento, adaptação, imigração) sem prescindir de leveza, espirituosidade e um lastro de sinceridade emocional que complementam as pinceladas fabulares sugeridas pelo roteiro escrito a seis mãos por pai e filhas, que concorreu ao Oscar.

Its a lovely film, but don't expect an uplifting and charming movie. This is a depressing and tense movie. The film starts out with the main family already in the game of grief after losing a child, and just goes down from there. It's sometimes unrealistic nature doesn't sit too snugly against the dread that surrounds them, but thankfully it redeems itself in its final scenes and you forgive it for everything that came before. Decent, but not great.
