The story is about a young lawyer travels to a gloomy eastern European village, where the local count, Dracula, takes an interest in him. He learns too late the count is a powerful vampire, one who would very much like take his wife-to-be, Mina, for his own. This movie has a cool Dracula and good make-up and good costumes.

Love the costuming and the unique depiction of Dracula. Very intriguing film. Some may find it weird and disturbing but that's why it's so fantastic. This film makes me want to read the novel. Winona Ryder is gorgeous and amazing as always. It's an artistic film which might be the reason it has received criticism. I loved this version. It's not over the top scary vampire stuff, it goes into humanity and reality in a way that isn't done today with horror.

Is that as a pose to Barbara Taylor Bradford's Dracula? Gary Oldman makes an unusually human Count, but otherwise this is a hideously miscast and laughably over-directed vanity project that irritates on every level.

For me this is simply an amazing film. Having been a big fan of the novel it was refreshing to see someone go back to basics and create a film that sticks as closely to the book as possible. In much the same way Peter Jackson nailed the look and feel of the Lord of the Rings books (even if you do have doubts about his storytelling) Coppola has, for me, nailed the mood and atmosphere of the Bram Stoker classic. The story needs no elaborating on. What is worth mentioning is the stunning performance by Gary Oldman as the man himself. Bringing an element to the character seldom scene (except maybe in the Nosferatu films) you begin to almost sympathise with this evil creature. Thats quite a feat! Anthony Hopkins is one of my favorite actors and his casting as Van Helsing was phenominal. What …

I skipped this in my ranking...so before I get to my top 25 I have to go back and put this one in.......I love this movie.......it isn't scary- but I am seldom scared anyway......what I like about the movie is the direction (masterfully done by Francis Ford Coppola), the cinematography, Makeup, Costumes and the cast (minus Keanu Reeves) and above all is the gripping performance by Gary Oldman as Dracula. Just like he is in every role he takes on, Oldman is brilliant and brings such a unique turn as the blood thirsty villain- it sucks you in immediately in every scene of his. Winona Ryder is serviceable as the love interest and Cary Elwes, Tom Waits and Sadie Frost offer support in the movie and offset the easily forgettable Reeves. Anthony Hopkins adds grit and humor as the sarcastic …
