I liked part 1 better than part 2 - but it's best to look at this as a whole. Though shocking, the sex is not titillating. Though the merits of art vs pornography will certainly be brought up, those familiar with the work of Lars von Trier knows he is not one to shy away from pushing the boundries. Great performances all around - even Shia LaBeouf manages to ring out a decent role. It's really the young Joe, Stacy Martin, who shines and watch for a stellar scene from Uma Thurman. Part 1 - with Christian Slater, seems to ring more true than part 2 for me.

'Nymphomaniac' is a story cut in the middle and separated into two films. Therefor, I view both volumes together as one complete whole. And what a whole it is. It's essentially the life story of a self-proclaimed nymphomaniac woman. We learn all the intimate details of her sexual habits, where they originate, how they affect countless others, and what it means for human sexuality in general. She professes all this to one man. He in turn draws unique comparisons for reasoning and offers thoughtful analysis. I quite liked their conclusions. The rest is a usual chronological flashback look at her younger self. It's a realistically eventful sexual ride. The sex overload never once feels repetitive. They always give the feeling of astute observation, rather than skewering into …

The most shocking aspect of Lars Von Trier's latest NYMPHOMANIAC is not the explicit sexual material or emotional devastation of his other films, but that it's actually quite hilarious. Gainsbourg puts in yet another tremendous performance, as does the actress playing young Joe, with Shia LaBeouf also putting in impressive work. But it's Uma Thurman, in only one scene, who absolutely owns the film. Though this will never happen, she delivers possibly the best performance of her career and deserves plenty of accolades which she will most likely, not receive. So far, however, so good. There's nothing titilating or pornographic about this film at all, and rightfully so. The complexities of Joe and her brilliantly told and constructed tale takes the front seat. Just like how the …
