It may come off as Edgar Wright-lite, but "Attack the Block" is a gutsy rare breed of action movie with an outside the box approach and subtle social commentary.

Lots of fun! A bunch of hooligans facing off against some hairy, hungry aliens. Known for featuring two actors who would go on to star in major sci-fi franchises (in John Boyega and Jodie Whittaker) as well as Nick Frost - it offers plenty of action while remaining surprisingly grounded. Director Joe Cornish would also go on to help write the screenplay for Ant-Man. A lot of young talent on display here and it works out quite well in its favor.

Its a really interesting take on the sci-fi alien invasion premise, with very minimalist yet effectively pulled off designs for the aliens, with a fantastically funny yet compelling cast. A great break-out performance for John Boyega, Attack the Block is done on a low budget but with clear dedication and more heart than we see from a lot of Hollywood blockbusters, good going director Joe Cornish.

When aliens invade a council estate in South London, a gang of local teenagers band together to defend their tower block. The idea behind this film has a lot of comic potential and the fact that Attack The Block was written and directed by Joe Cornish from cult TV skit show The Adam & Joe show meant I was looking forward to it immensely. It has that low-budget-but-in-a-cool-way sort of feel and some knowing direction and nice visual flourishes added to the anticipation but it has one MASSIVE flaw. It's just not funny enough. Nick Frost's brief appearances raised a couple of smiles but as a whole the film takes itself WAY too seriously. The alleged comedy relies on little more than ghetto speak and weed references leaving the story feeling like just another generic monster movie with the …

Attack the block is a comedy/horror/thriller action film about a gang of youths in South London who rob a helpless woman on her way home. A sudden explosion and something falling from the sky, allow the woman to escape. When the gang's leader, 15 year old Moses (John Boyega) checks what happened he is attacked by an extraterrestrial creature. He and his band of loyal followers slay the alien for attacking him and takes the body with them hoping to make a few pounds out of the strange creature. From there, things get really ugly when Moses and friends find their block under attack from these fuzzy ultra black extraterrestrials with neon blue razor sharp teeth.
~~Warning: Spoiler~~
There is lots of swearing and drugs references. Towards the end Moses blows up the aliens with an oven …
