A Depression-era screwballer, "My Man Godfrey" filled the screen with joy and laughter during a period when people needed it the most.

This kind of comedy of manners is the kind of thing that would be made as a vehicle for Adam Sandler these days and would therefore be mindless, hateful junk. But starring the likes of Carole Lombard and William Powell and sporting the kind of witty and insightful script they just don't write any more, it's a joy. Let down only by a rather unconvincing ending it's otherwise a charming screwball comedy from the old school.

A really delightful film that is as charming as it is entertaining. William Powell gets some great one-liners and the film is also stocked full of hilarious supporting characters, as well. Carole Lombard's unhinged devotion to Godfrey is, to me, the heart of the film and what makes a lot of the madcap action so funny.
