Plot Outline:

Five criminals, led by the erudite Professor Marcus, plan a daring daylight heist of gold bullion while posing as classical musicians for octogenarian Mrs. Wilberforce, Marcus' landlady. The heist is pulled off without a hitch, but Mrs. Wilberforce soon deduces the quintet's involvement in it, and demands that they return the money and then turn themselves in. Not too keen on this idea, the five criminals resolve to 'do in' the old lady. Killing a sweet, defenseless old widow in cold blood, though, turns out to be a lot harder than the criminals first anticipated.

Never too farcical or far-fetched, Ealing's last great black comedy is one of the wittiest and darkest films that classic English cinema ever produced. It is the very definition of British humour!

The Ladykillers (1956) review

“Professor” Marcus (Alec Guinness) rents rooms in Mrs. Louisa Wilberforce (Katie Johnson) house. he plans a robbery together with a con-man “Major” Courtney (Cecil Parker), Harry Robinson (Peter Sellers), the dense ex-boxer “One-Round” Lawson (Danny Green), and the brutal gangster Louis Harvey (Herbert Lom). They play Boccherini's Minuet (3rd movement) from String Quintet in E, Op. 11 No. 5 during their planning sessions. A memorable score with well timed comical scenes coupled with crime sequences. The humor was never forced and the supporting cast was effective in portraying their characters. It has an unexpected ending which pokes fun on the criminals who masterminded the bountiful cash. Some good lines from: Mrs. Wilberforce – “Simply try for one hour to behave like gentlemen.”...
