New DVD and Blu-Ray Releases to Crave This Week: An Eclipes, One Knight and Day

Chris Kavan - wrote on 11/30/10 at 11:06 AM CT

If you're one of the people who get all riled up over Team Edward vs. Team Jacob, then rejoice, for your next fix is here!

1) Whatever team you root for, chances are that The Twilight Saga: Eclipse will soon join your collection. Granted, I don't understand what all the fuss is about, but then again I'm a die-hard Star Wars and Harry Potter fan so I know all about obsessing over a series. …

Weekend Box Office: Tangled Comes Within a Hair of Topping Potter

Chris Kavan - wrote on 11/29/10 at 12:00 PM CT

It was a family affair at the box office over the holiday weekend, as the top three films were all family-friendly and newer adult fare failed to bring in bigger crowds.

Coming in at the top spot for the second straight weekend was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Pt. 1. Potter and co. brought in another $50.3 million. Although it posted a steeper-than-average 60% drop from opening …

Classic Car Crisis or When Teenagers Attack!

Chris Kavan - wrote on 11/27/10 at 01:14 PM CT

Great cars and unruly teens have a pretty rough relationship in films. The cars usually lose. Here then are some great cars that have bravely given their lives for one night or day of fun and freedom.

1) 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California in Ferris Bueller's Day Off - Ferris was right, the car is choice and of course he'd want to take it for a spin. Too bad the garage attendants had the same …

Black Friday is the Perfect Opportunity to Upgrade Your Home Theater System (Hint, Hint Alex)

Chris Kavan - wrote on 11/25/10 at 12:39 PM CT

If you've put off upgrading your TV, your surround sound, your media player - it's time to hold off no more. Black Friday is that special time of year where people sit outside a store for hours (or, if crazy enough, days) to rush into crushing horde of bargain shoppers looking for that one deal that will make their year.

Yet why get up before the crack of dawn and fight the crowds when you …

Nick's Top Picks of Cheap Blu-Rays to Buy

Nick - wrote on 11/24/10 at 02:05 PM CT

With Black Friday only a few days away, now is a great time to snatch up some incredible buys on Blu-Rays (I know I have). I've picked the best of cheap Blu-rays so you don't have to sift through them yourself. But if you want to see what else is on the cheap list, check them out at Amazon - Blu-Ray Deals

1. The best blu-ray I found was The Departed. This movie is ranked #21 on the …

New DVD and Blu-Ray Releases to Crave This Week: Want to Eat Pray Love or Hang With The Expendables?

Chris Kavan - wrote on 11/24/10 at 11:28 AM CT

Two sides of the same coin? No, these movies don't even occupy the same currency. But, at least this week there's some variety to spice things up.

1) On one hand you have The Expendables. This is pure action, a call back to the days of 80s action, with 80s stars. It's a lot of fun, providing you like that kind of thing - just don't expect Oscar-worthy acting or story.

2) On the other hand …

New Releases to Crave: Fairy Tales & Faster Drugs

Chris Kavan - wrote on 11/23/10 at 12:25 PM CT

Since Thanksgiving is the week, it looks like Wednesday is the new Friday for new movies this week. There are plenty of new releases, but I still think they all face an uphill battle to dethrone Harry Potter from the top spot.

1) The #1 contender to bleed off Potter fans would be Disney's updated Rapunzel story, Tangled. With a feisty heroine and awkward love story, it's sure to hit close to …

Weekend Box Office: Potter Casts Biggest Spell Yet, Next Three Days Can't Last One Weekend

Chris Kavan - wrote on 11/22/10 at 10:49 AM CT

Despite being the 7th film in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Pt. 1 proved that the wizard series still has plenty of magic left. It easily premiered in the #1 spot, earning a series-record $125.1 million besting the $102.7 million that Goblet of Fire opened with in 2005.

While Deathly Hallows, Pt. 1 was only 6th on the all-time opening charts, it did manage to break one …

Movie Magic Comes in Many Forms

Chris Kavan - wrote on 11/20/10 at 01:24 PM CT

In honor of Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows, Pt. 1 being releases, here's a rundown of the many (other) types of magic that has found its way into movies - good or bad.

1) Best "Classic" Witch - The Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz - Nothing like a green-skinned, broom-riding, cackling hag to ruin your day. She even has a point hat and everything! Plus, flying monkeys - can't …

New Movies to Crave: Potter Mania Strikes Again

Chris Kavan - wrote on 11/19/10 at 10:18 AM CT

Technically there are two new films being released, but I can guarantee only one will shoot to the top.

1) That would be Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Pt. 1. Expect a legion of fans, some may even be dressed up, to descend upon theaters and ravenously take in the (first part of the) last Harry Potter film. It's hard to say if records will be broken, but I can say without a doubt it …

Music That Defines Movies: The Song Remains the Same... As the Movie Title

Chris Kavan - wrote on 11/17/10 at 02:19 PM CT

You have to give credit - not all movies can pull of the feat of having a song with the movie title in it and still make it work. I mean, the vast majority of movies don't need a catchy song and others get by with a great soundtrack with no need for an original song. But for the few that dare, you can get by with some gems.

1) Live and Let Die - Every James Bond film opens with the title …

New DVD and Blu-Ray Releases to Crave This Week: Avatars, Airbenders, Christmas and All-Right Kids

Chris Kavan - wrote on 11/16/10 at 11:13 AM CT

The hits keep rolling in as it's going to be easy to get a jump on some anticipated films for the holiday season.

1) Leading the pack, some may say double-dipping, is the super duper awesome edition of Avatar. Featuring three versions of the film, deleted scenes, documentary and other extras, those who purchases the bare-bones edition will either be content with what they have, or shell out …

Weekend Box Office: Brains Over Brawn and Aliens

Chris Kavan - wrote on 11/15/10 at 10:23 AM CT

A runaway train and an alien invasion couldn't halt the efforts of one Megamind. The animated film was once again on the top of the box office charts, taking in an estimated $30.1 million. The 3-D screens continued to be a boost, as fully 63% of that gross came from the extra-dimensional showings.

Out of the newcomers, the out-of-control train, along with Denzel Washington and Chris Pine, …

Clown and Out in Hollywood

Chris Kavan - wrote on 11/13/10 at 01:11 PM CT

While I don't necessarily have a problem with guys with red noses, funny hair and white face paint, a lot of other people do seem to have issues. Luckily for us, Hollywood continually reminds us that clowns are either scary or at least messed up. Isn't that nice of them? Here then are the top choices for giving you nightmares and hopefully passing the fear on to the next generation.

1) …

New Movies to Crave: Unstoppable Train, Angry Aliens and Morning People

Chris Kavan - wrote on 11/12/10 at 12:58 PM CT

Can an Unstoppable train or an alien invasion topple a Megamind? That will be decided over the weekend as three contenders enter the scene to see if they can steal some thunder away from last week's winners.

1) Even though I don't think any film looks to be an absolute winner, I guess I'm going with Unstoppable as the best of the new films. Mainly because I like Denzel Washington and Chris …

A Veteran Film for All Occasions

Chris Kavan - wrote on 11/11/10 at 01:05 PM CT

In honor of Veteran's Day, here is a list of films that best exemplify the honor, bravery and sacrifice of the men and women who have served our country.

1) The Kick-Ass Veteran - Rambo: First Blood - Sly Stallone has made many a Rambo film, but the original is still the king. It may be a bit over-the-top, but it shows that one man can make a difference, especially with plenty of weapons and …

New DVD and Blu-Ray Releases to Crave This Week: Grow Up, Pilgrim

Chris Kavan - wrote on 11/09/10 at 10:40 AM CT

One highly successful film, one under-performing cult hit and lots of fun for everyone this week in releases.

1) I know where my allegiance lies - with Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. I don't care if it was a box office failure, I'm the target demographic and I thought the movie was a blast. If you like video games at all, you owe it to yourself to watch this one.

2) I'm not quite as enamored …

Weekend Box Office: It's Megamind That Matters

Chris Kavan - wrote on 11/08/10 at 11:58 AM CT

It appears that audiences have been having an animated withdraw, as Megamind was the top draw this weekend.

With an estimated $47.7, Megamind had a strong debut, though predictions had it pegged somewhere in the $55 - $60 million range, so it also may have been a slight letdown. Despite the smaller opening, Megamind was on par with an earlier hit, How to Train Your Dragon and if it can hold …

When Giant Animals Attack!

Chris Kavan - wrote on 11/06/10 at 02:36 PM CT

Rodents of unusual size? Not good enough, I say! I want my creatures to be so wholly humongous, they put any other animal to shame. Size does matter when it comes to crushing puny humans.

1) King Kong - Don't monkey around with this guy - whether it's the original or one of the remakes, he always manages to escape and wreck havoc. No matter how much money you think you can make off an …

New Films to Crave: Between a Rock, a Due Date and One Megamind

Chris Kavan - wrote on 11/05/10 at 07:01 PM CT

Halloween weekend over? Good, now we're back on track. A lot of films come out today, and depending on your mood, you may just find one you like.

1) Me? I'm pulling for 127 hours. Anytime you get to watch a one-man show about amputation, there must be something going right. I have faith that James Franco can pull off this dramatic story.

2) You don't want drama - try comedy. Robert Downey …

When Fiction Becomes Reality for Movie Characters

Chris Kavan - wrote on 11/04/10 at 11:48 AM CT

Sure, movies are already fictional, but some movies aren't content with one fictional world - they make their characters become lost in their own fictional worlds. It's like a movie within a movie - but it's not so hard to wrap your head around. Here are the top contenders:

1) Pleasantville - Imagine you could join the cast of your favorite television show - I mean, what would you do? For two …

New DVD and Blu-Ray Releases to Crave This Week: Toys, Music and Goonies

Chris Kavan - wrote on 11/02/10 at 11:26 AM CT

It's a good week for the family as many of the new releases coming out are great for people of all ages.

1) Leading the pack is Pixar's latest juggernaut Toy Story 3. Breaking all kinds of records during its theatrical run, and in my opinion the best out of the Toy Story bunch, this is sure to be a favorite with the family.

2) In other family news, The Goonies is also getting an updated …

Weekend Box Office: Extra Dimension Gives Saw the Edge It Needs

Chris Kavan - wrote on 11/01/10 at 12:26 PM CT

As far as a franchise films series can go, Saw went out more with a bang than a whimper. Thanks in large part to its 3D, the supposedly "Final Chapter" of Saw earned an estimated $22.5 million over the weekend or a total of $24.2 with Thursday showings factored in. It was much better than Saw VI's $14.3 million, but couldn't break the $30 million mark as Saws II - V had done.

Paranormal …
