I sat through "A Scanner Darkly" waiting for it to start making sense. I don't know if reading the novel grants you insight into this otherworldly vision of dystopia, but I felt I was missing vital information to fully put together this movie's plot and message.

Despite the sci-fi setting, this film is essentially a heartbreaking portrait of the destructive nature of drug addiction. It's sort of a high-tech Requiem for a Dream. The rotoscoping animation style creates an other-worldly effect that makes the film more surreal and thought-provoking. One of Linklater's best films.

Before you decide to not watch this movie just because Keanu Reeves is playing a serious role, get off your high horse and take a seat on the couch. This movie will rock your socks. Robert Downey Jr. and Woody Harrelson have some really great dialouge in this flick. It's hilarious. Aside from humor, this movie deals with some really philosophical issues. It's not just about drugs... Sometimes the plot can get hard to follow, so you might have to watch this movie more than once. Although the movie's theme can be a bit depressing, it really makes you think. All in all, this movie is definitely worth watching a couple times.

Creative (and eerie looking) animated thriller, though its monotonous tone eventually becomes tiresome. FInal Grade: B

A fantastic film in both the animation style and the acting. It's quite dark, but it's one of the best anti-drug films out there. A paranoid journey, but the mannerisms and dialog are spot on and it's a worthwhile trip.

Pity. I think that could have been a wonderful sci-fi flick if the would have put the money needed to pay to this "recognized" actors. The plot is solid, the script (specially the lines by Downey Jr.) is fantastic... pretty much a great premise. Nothing to complain or nothing against animation. I liked the style in this one. But, I think that for a Philip Dick novel, you *have* to use real actors. To my point of view, it's like he deserves it. Still, a great film.
