"Interview With The Vampire" by Yojimbo

A vampire from born in New Orleans in the 18th century tells the tale of his life to an incredulous reporter. Anne Rice's own adaptation of her novel is quite literary which tempers the melodrama to give it quite a theatrical feel, added to by a good supporting cast; Tom Cruise actually gives one of his more characterful performances and is clearly enjoying himself as the rakish Lestat. It's obviously mainly about the eye candy and gothic romanticism for the benefit of the ladies, but there is also some great period detail and interesting themes running through it; particularly the eternal child and links between voyeurism and violence. A VERY young Kirsten Dunst gives a mature performance as Louie's unwilling child/love although I felt Banderas' character was underused. It's brooding, …

Interview with the Vampire review

Way back when there were the Twilight franchise the Hollywood A list hunks ruled the vampire scene. You have Christian Slater (the reporter Daniel Molloy), Brad Pitt (the gorgeous Louis de Pointe du Lac), Tom Cruise (the wise vampire) and Kirsten Dunst (Claudia the vampire daughter) as the talented main cast delivers. Antonio Banderas as Armand also shines. Cinematography was grandiose to accentuate the beautiful 18th century era, an elegant score with a wonderful screenplay based on the popular novel created by Anne Rice. The set pieces were majestic and the pace of the picture was not disappointing. Some memorable lines: Armand - "The world changes, we do not; therein lies the irony that finally kills us." Lestat - "Don't be afraid. I'm going to give you the choice I never …

Interview with the vampire, is an exquisite, very stylish film, that at times is boring, and repellent. But the acting is so good, that you have to wonder why these people did not get Oscars for their work. The Story: A vampire who has lived for 200 years, tells Christian Slater his life story, first of how he became what he is, what he's done of what he is, and what he plans to do next. Tom Cruise plays the lead vampire, who turned Brad Pitt into a vampire. Brad Pitt plays the vampire who is telling the life story to Christian Slater. Kirsten Dunst (Jumangi, Small Soldiers) plays the young girl, who the both male vampires turns into a vampire. Therefore she is cursed and will stay a young girl the rest of her life, till someone kills her. The film itself is a fine one, and if you watch …

Probably not in most people's Top 50- I for one loved this movie. Despite the obvious great performances from Cruise (in my opinion his best work) and Pitt (equally as impressive), the emergence of Dunst (who sorry to say has never lived up to her breakout role here) and the small but powerful supporting roles of Slater, Rea and Banderas...it is the flair of Neil Jordans' direction that makes this movie really stand out and takes the writing of Anne Rice to a whole different level. No other director could have made it work as well as Jordan did and you could argue that it could not have been casted better either. Not a scary film at all but it works as a dark drama that keeps you glued to the screen because everything is so powerful about it. Nice work indeed.
