Classy art with touches of body horror, "Eyes Without a Face" is poetic as often as it is shocking

'Eyes Without A Face' evokes realistic horrors through the means of medical science. Characters become villainous when driven to extremes in an attempt to regain normality. There's elements of the grotesque mixed with the melancholy. A more dramatic slow-paced watch than expected. It's a shocker that is not entirely genre specific, but it definitely delivers the shocks. Subtle moments of beauty throughout add a special eeriness to the offsetting nature of the story.

A really great film, much better than I could have ever imagined. It makes you want to see more by Franju. Don't miss the short film on the Criterion disc. One of the top French films and it makes my list (SEE LIST).

This is classic horror at its best. At times beautiful and horrifying this film takes a scientific approach to its madness that makes it all the more frightening.
