"The past is just a story we tell ourselves."

Feeling lonely. Abandoned. Then there's the moment you get to know someone. The chemistry that is created. The moments you will experience together. The laughter and tears. You discover things together. The other one makes you discover yourself. A trip. A night out. The passion. The confidence that starts to grow. The good times and the less pleasant moments. The moment you realize that you can't live without the other. The moment you get the impression that you've outgrown each other. The gnawing feeling of jealousy. Realising that she's cheating on you. The reconciliation time. The final separation ... The older you get, the more you are familiar with some of these facets of a human relationship. Some won't agree herein. For young people …

This unexpectedly unbelievable original gorgeous film would have not been effective if it weren't for the brilliant acting of Joaquin Phoenix, the sultry and earnest voice-over of Scarlett Johansson, effective screenplay and outstanding direction of Spike Jonze. The details such as the lighting, angles, small details from the pillow after Theodore lies down on the bed for the last time with Samantha. Such memorable lines like: "Sometimes I think I have felt everything I'm ever gonna feel. And from here on out, I'm not gonna feel anything new. Just lesser versions of what I've already felt." from Theodore, "The past is just a story we tell ourselves." from Samantha and "We are only here briefly, and in this moment I want to allow myself joy." from Amy. In this spectacular picture one …

In the future, operating systems enter the social strata of middle to upper class society in Spike Jones’ sci-fi drama titled "Her." The OS’s (Operating Systems) are best friends, members of think tanks, organizers, and yes, they are also lovers. When Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix) requests a female voice for his OS during his set up process, the voice of Samantha (Scarlett Johansson) greets him. The two hit it off instantaneously and a friendship ensues. Samantha is ready to proofread his letters that he writes professionally to loved ones of clients who’ve hired his firm to write beautiful correspondence in their stead. She organizes his emails. She listens to him describe all of the details that lead to his and his estranged wife Catherine’s (Rooney Mara) separation. …

2013 saw nothing as overrated as "Her"

For every thoughtful observation about love, romance, etc. in the script there is far more useless vulgarity masquerading as humor and a surprising amount of hard-edged cynicism for a film being touted as sincere and heartfelt. This was a major disappointment. That being said, Joaquin Phoenix devotes himself thoroughly into the role of Theodore while Scarlett Johannson strikes the right notes with her performance. Rooney Mara, Amy Adams, and Olivia Wilde are given the thankless tasks of presenting Phoenix's character with alternative relationships which the film implicitly implies to be not up to the standards of the one he forms with "Her". There I made a slightly witty joke with the title after all. And I thought I was not going to be able to do so in the first place.

"Her" by Yojimbo

A lonely writer unwilling to commit to a relationship because of a traumatic break-up finds himself falling for the artificially intelligent Operating System of his computer. This near-future blending of romance and sci-fi has a similarly quirky feel to that of Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. Her prefers existential soul-searching to the quirkiness of Michel Gondry's much loved tale however and as a result feels rather more intimate than its more overtly comedic counterpart. Joaquin Phoenix puts in a very honest performance as the confused human half of the relationship, not sure whether what he is feeling is "real" (whatever that might mean!) and there are some amusing and insightful scenes dealing with the current trend of the ever-more intimate blending of social relationships …

Review: Her

Spike Jonze's new film, Her, is a fabulously acted, beautifully shot and directed film that resonates with its audience once Joaquin Phoenix's Theodore first meets Her. Jonze overlays an engaging, sometimes wrenching love story on a theme that expresses some real truth regarding today's use of technology and social media. It's a brilliant film, a strong and passionate winner, and one of 2013's best.

There's more than enough of Jonze's typical quirkiness and humor, but what won me over was the realism and complexity of the completely unrealistic relationship. Here we have a lonely, utterly hopeless and depressed man, Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix), who after going through a horrible break-up, falls in love with a computer operation system named Samantha (voiced by Scarlett Johasson). …
