Certainly worth watching for the gorgeous Gilliamesque production design, this dark gothic fairytale from Jeunet otherwise didn't blow me away. It's certainly visually pleasing, but I felt it was a bit of a case of style over substance. I may have been expecting too much, but it definitely warrants a rewatch.

The strength of this film is obviously the steampunk dystopian visuals. For that alone, the film enchants. Plotwise, the film is less linear and sometimes that can get frustrating. Characters and plotlines drift in and out of the film. While I prefer Jeunet's better Amelie and A Very Long Engagement, the film is still ultimately engaging.

As mentioned by another reviewer this movie is very strange and very French. If you don't like strange movies you wont like this movie at all. City of Lost Children is also visually beautiful and original, which makes it worthwhile enough for me. It is also fun and completely different, so if you watch a lot of sci-fi this movie may be for you. Its like a sci-fi fairy tale, my favorite!
