Charlton Heston fights mutants in a post-apocalyptic future. Later remade as ‘I Am Legend’. Hokey but Heston adds some gravitas and Anthony Zerbe is a conniving antagonist as the mutant leader.

I liked it slightly more than the recent 'I Am Legend'. Though, I didn't find the weird vampire creatures here all that interesting either.

This film is the 2nd Hollywood adaptation of Richard Matheson's novel I Am Legend (the 1st being The Last Man on Earth with Vincent Price and the more recent I am Legend with Will Smith). This film has a brilliant performance by Charlton Heston this film is a far cry from the adaptations that came both before this one and after this one that came after it The plot seems too similar to Beneath the Planet of the Apes in the fact that you have a bunch Mutants that have survived a nuclear holocaust and have become Religious fanatics who are out to kill Charlton Heston just because he does not look like one of them.

The story this is based on is classic, but I can see why they remade this as it was ripe for retelling. The only real problem is that this has a definite 70s feel - the clothes, the terrible score, the jive talk - it's all very dated. If you can look past that, though, it does a credible job.

To date, there have been three adaptations of Richard Matheson's excellent novel "I am Legend"; Vincent Price starred in "The Last Man on Earth" in 1964 and Will Smith did a credible job in "I am Legend" (2007). For me though the best version undoubtedly remains The Omega Man. Cheesy it may be, dated, unquestionably but scene for scene, this is one of the best Sci Fi movies ever. Nobody could have played this role any better then Charlton Heston as an archetypal all action survivalist. A gripping, stirring and thought provoking script hammers home the apocalyptic vision and the action rarely misses a beat. A classic film born of the 70s with a role tailor made for Heston and remember, "There's never a cop around when you need one".
