Letters from Iwo Jima review

The compassionate and strategic General Tadamichi Kuribayashi (Ken Watanabe) takes command and inspects the island of Iwo Jima. Saigo, the teenage baker is exposed to the cruelty of war. The screenplay was wonderful with thought provoking lines: From mother of a dead American soldier’s letter named Sam and a Lt. Col. Nishi - “Do what is right because it is right.” “…but I don’t want to die for nothing.” Col. Adachi – “It's inevitable that people will die.” Gen. Kuribayashi – “A day will come when they will weep and pray for your souls. I will always be in front of you.” “If our children can live safely for one more day, it'll be worth one more day that we defend this island!”

The film definitely portrayed subjects on cowardice, courage, death, suicide, principles, honor, loyalty, thinking of the children's future and leadership and love for family/country. It portrayed the perspective of the Japanese side in World War II. The artists involved show authenticity n the acting and direction and production was flawless because of the skilled hands of Eastwood and Spielberg. Letters from Iwo Jima is a rare intellectual war picture that deserves its accolades and respectful view of historical significance from a different view. Obviously one of the director's best efforts.
