Unique deviation from the typical western formula. It still has the setting and hallmarks of the genre. But the plot is different from a range war or 'cowboys vs Indians' stuff. It is in fact a murder mystery. And a pretty solid one at that. Veteran director Henry Hathaway does a fine job at crafting suspense and keeping the audience's attention. Dean Martin is kind of 'meh' although Robert Mitchum and Roddy McDowall were great. Yaphet Kotto (Alien) has a memorable supporting part.
