Charlton Heston plays a tough Indian fighter in this 'Cavalry vs Indians' western.
Much of the drama stems from Heston's irascible hatred for Apaches despite being well versed in their culture and tactics. Complicating matters is the return of a tribal chief's son (Palance) who appears outwardly civilized but in fact remains a fanatical warrior at heart.
Heston's character feels very much like a forerunner to John Wayne's similarly dark Ethan Edwards in The Searchers. Unlike that movie's more nuanced portrayal of the same conflict, Arrowhead leaves viewers with an uncomfortable implication that Indians cannot be trusted.
