Alex Garland rarely fails to impress and Civil War is no exception. Politics aside, the film shows how important it is to document the truth - no matter how brutal things may get. And even thought he has but a single scene, Jesse Plemons continues to prove how great of an actor he is - but the main cast is also a solid unit. Given I'm writing this mere weeks before the 2024 election, just before Halloween in fact I'm also getting real-world chills - this is scarier than any horror film I've seen in a long time.

If the gripping "Civil War " feels too politically muted ar emotionally distant, that's most likely because it's neither about politics or emotions. But about the duties and diligence of journalists and the dangers that come with the job description.

Civil War (A24) seems more afraid than edgy

Glossy and gritty speculative thriller about a hypothetical civil war in the present-day United States. Seems unlikely right? Right? (Nervous laughter)
The plot finds the USA under siege by rebellious factions and a tyrannical president (played by Nick Offerman). The main story follows a quartet of journalists who travel to D. C. and chronicle the bloodshed left by the conflict.
Don’t expect any big battle scenes. A lot of this movie is set in the aftermath or away from the action. Things do pick up in the second half. The sense of chaos and societal collapse is pretty convincing on a smaller budget.
The cast is fine for the most part. They play their roles well enough. Kirsten Dunst is unlikable at times. But that does pay off for the ending. Nick Offerman is an odd choice …
