So Max Landis thinks this is better than Boyhood and Birdman when it comes to being "original", what a joke he is.

First off, whoever was in charge of marketing this film should have been fired. American Ultra, as I recall, was advertised as a stoner comedy with a bit of action thrown in. What it should have been advertised is John Wick mixed with the Bourne Identity with a few lighthearted and romantic moments thrown in. This is overall a pretty dark film with a lot of violence.
Jesse Eisenberg plays, Mike Howell, a guy who likes weed and hanging out with his girlfriend, Phoebe Larson (Kristen Stewart) as the film opens, he is planning the perfect proposal in Hawaii, but thanks to a sudden panic attack (and not the first one) he is unable to leave the small town of Liman, West Virginia. American Ultra (2015) R Mike (Jesse Eisenberg) seems like your usual stoner but, aside from being good at smoking weed, he is also the greatest government agent in existence. Mike has been marked for extermination because the CIA thinks that he has become such a liability, but it’s not going to be easy to take him down. This is a movie that can’t decide what type of film it is. It’s part stoner comedy, part romantic drama, and part violent action film. The problem is that the first two parts (stoner comedy/romantic drama) don’t mix well with the violent action film. And boy is this film violent and bloody. Mike kills one man with a spoon to the throat and another by beheading a guy with a metal dustpan. Eisenberg does have excellent chemistry with Kristen Stewart, who plays …

'American Ultra' is not the movie it was advertised to be. This action/comedy is very light on comedy and heavy on dark dramatic themes. Only a small amount of humor exists. The tone morphs into a somber reflection of the film's brutal violence, making the overtly bloody killings no fun at all. The final fight had me feeling bad for the dead men who were just doing their job. There's no actual villain. Everyone is following orders that have no evil implications or ulterior motives. This comes about in the dour second half. The first half is a bit lighter. Much time is devoted to setting up the main characters and their loving relationship. I was actually invested in their romance. They have a few nice heartfelt moments. It pays off in the finale. All the actors are great. …
