Plot: Maurice Legrand is a cashier in a terrible relationship with Adele but thinks he has found a new love in Lucienne and quickly makes her his mistress. But while Legrand searches for something deep, "Lulu" is only in it for the money, as she is nothing but streetwalker, who, in turn, loves her pimp Dede and will bleed Legrand dry in order to please him. -- Chris Kavan

Jean Renoir's first sound film is an atmospheric, sometimes disturbingly matter-of-fact look at a simple man's ideals being stripped away. Final Grade: B
