One of the original "heroic bloodshed" HK gangster movies and it hasn't aged well. The first third is particularly schmaltzy and contrived, but the trademark Woo testoterone fuelled gun-battles are still effective.

John Woo hit the jackpot with this one, realized and sympathetic characters make for much more meaningful action scenes. Ho (Lung Ti) is especially marvelous as a man trying to leave his gangster life style behind after going to prison for a counter fitting deal gone bad. His brother Kit (Leslie Cheung), a cop doesn't believe he has fully left the lifestyle behind and blames him for the death of their father. This formula makes for a much better better film that Woo's later and overly long Hard-Boiled.
