Resnais approaches a somewhat literal storyline, then overlaps it with brilliant uses of voiceover and flashback imagery. The dreamlike montages of imagery and narration do much to portray true emotion and Resnais wisely allows the audience to fill in a lot of the blanks of the film's characters and relationships.

The first images of this movie along with the voice over are one of most greatest experiences I had watching a film. Very similar to In the mood for love, but probably better. A masterpiece. I think I dare to say that is in my top 5 best love stories ever.
