New DVD and Blu-Ray Releases to Crave This Week: A Dilemma for The Green Hornet

By Chris Kavan - 05/03/11 at 11:16 AM CT

After last week's yawner, it looks like we're back into the swing of things with some decent offerings.

1) I was skeptical when I heard about the casting but The Green Hornet looks like it turned out alright. While I'm not saying it's going to displace Dark Knight or even Iron Man for super hero superiority, I'm guessing spending an hour or so with Seth Rogan, Jay Chou, Cameron Diaz and Christoph Waltz will be entertaining enough.

2) If an action comedy isn't what you're in the mood for how about a straight-up comedy? Vince Vaughn and Kevin James, joined by Jennifer Connelly and Winona Ryder will try to make things right with The Dilemma. I have a feeling this will be about as fun for me as Couples Retreat and Grown Ups - that is, a middle-of-the-road comedy with a few laughs but overall generic feel.

3) Trying to put an Latina twist on the classic Sense and Sensibility, From Prada to Nada shows what happens when you go from money to nothing - and still manage to find romance. While this film is completely wrong for me, if you have an interest you might as well give it a shot.

4) On the Blu-Ray front Criterion continues to update their library with Smiles of a Summer Night and Fat Girl. Smiles is a rare comedy from Ingmar Bergman and well worth watching while Fat Girl is another film that pushes boundaries by Catherine Breillat.

Also getting Blu-Ray treatment: the bloody vampire affair featuring George Clooney as a bad guy From Dusk Till Dawn, a film that will look great on Blu-Ray (even if the story doesn't match the quality of the look) What Dreams May Come and two films featuring a young Tom Cruise: military cadets taking charge in Taps and a high school football player trying to escape his dead-end town in All the Right Moves.

Nice job of reviewing the new releases. I think I might download "The Green Hornet" from Vuze now.
